Antibiotics Useless on Pigs

Antibiotics Useless on Pigs Unknown-150x150
Are we next?

“Super” pigs grow bigger and faster than traditional hogs. All you
need to do is shine a light in their faces 24 hours a day, cram them
into small cages, feed them GM corn, and pump ‘em up with drugs from
pharmaceutical pushers. Only one problem – super pigs are loaded with
“super” bacteria. Ah, the industrialization of food.

Happier than a pig in poop, some say to convey a message of joy. That
may not always be the case according to a study that just came out of
China, where half the world’s pigs reside. It shows pigs raised in
confined animal feeding operations (or CAFOs) and fed massive amounts of
antibiotics have highly contaminated poop. Apparently, these CAFO
prisons have become breeding grounds for antibiotic-resistant super
bacteria.

“When once you interfere with the order of nature, there is no knowing where the results will end.”
- Herbert Spencer

Will it spread to humans?

The study found
that the manure of antibiotic-treated pigs is ridden with
antibiotic-resistant genes, up to 28,000 times the amount found in
antibiotic-free manure. The study notes that it’s possible for these
antibiotic-resistant genes to transfer to human bacteria, making
bacterial infections in humans harder to treat.

“Since the manure is often sold as fertilizer or washes downstream
into rivers, those antibiotic-resistant genes can spread to other forms
of bacteria, decreasing the overall effectiveness of the drugs in human
beings,” an article in Time Magazine explains.

Wired magazine quotes James Tiedje (one of the study’s authors) as saying,
“It is a question of probability. The larger the concentration of
antibiotic resistance genes, and the more they are distributed in the
environment, the more there is an increase in the probability this will
lead to serious problems. I am not in favor of waiting for this to
happen, when we know it is going to happen at some stage; it is better
to manage it up front as best we can. It is extremely difficult to find
new, effective, safe antibiotics. So we have to protect the ones we
have.”

Are bacteria bad?

So, if pigs are developing antibiotic-resistant bacteria, are these
pharmaceutical drugs even worth the price farmers’ pay? Time will tell, I
guess. I believe, though, that this could be a turning point for some
farmers. I mean who would continue to buy something that didn’t work?
Like most Chinese products, even their food seems to be broken, and
America’s isn’t much better.

If antibiotics are becoming ineffective on pigs, will they eventually
become ineffective on humans? Is our bacteria adapting to what
pharmaceutical pushers are dealing us? Or what if the “Germ Theory
is wrong altogether? What if it’s not everyday bacteria, viruses or
“germs” that make us sick, but the fact that our weakened bodies or
“terrains” are thrown off balance by the ever-mutating organisms? Even
Louis Pasteur, the one who came up with the theory and pushed it into
mainstream medicine, later recanted it.

Keep the bureaucrats out of it

While I agree that the overuse of antibiotics is bad, I don’t agree
with the solutions some are suggesting. Many are clamoring for more
government regulations to stop the spread of these super-bacteria. Is
that really what we want? The state didn’t “protect” us from them in the
first place.

The FDA approved the use of these growth-promoting antibiotics,
likely knowing full well what the effect would be. It also approves
thousands of drugs that kill more than 100,000 people every year.

It’s high time people take direct action and find out for themselves
what they are eating. The free-market always provides a solution given
there is a demand for it. If people don’t want CAFO-raised hogs, someone
else will provide a sustainable solution.

I’m no fan of extending the long, expensive, over-burdensome and
ruthless arm of the state to settle this issue. I’m for leaving it up to
you, the consumer. Even though this study focuses on China, the same
tactics are used here, in the good ole’ US, so wake up. Knowledge is
power. All you have to do is build your immune systems and drugs won’t
be necessary.

My body

I feel healthy, strong and alive. That is, after I stopped eating
processed foods, factory-farmed meat, conventionally grown crops and,
yes, even stopped going to the doctor. I haven’t had a “check-up” in
years. You are what you eat, after all.

I am of the belief that illness occurs when a nutrient-deficiency
allows bacteria, viruses and other “bugs” to multiply rapidly and throw
the body off balance.

When this happens, instead of throwing the body further off balance
with antibiotics, why not load-up on nutrient-dense, raw and fermented
foods, loaded with enzymes and probiotics, like raw milk, yogurt,
kombucha and lacto-fermented veggies (sauerkraut).

This approach works for me and even my 18-month-old daughter. I will
not get her vaccinated, nor will I take her to get antibiotics from the
doctor. This is an important time in her life to build her immune
system. She needs to be outside, playing in the dirt, playing with
animals, and consuming cultured foods loaded with probiotics.

Probiotics… Huh?

Probiotics – also known as good bacteria – might be a better way to fight bad bacteria. An interesting article by clinical nutritionist and chiropractic doctor Tim O’Shea explains why:

There are some 300 types of good bacteria at work in the colon
which are necessary for many life functions, including complete
digestion, absorption of vitamins and nutrients, and keeping the numbers
of potentially pathological ba
cteria in check. Antibiotics kill
all of them. It may take weeks or months for the body to rebuild its
normal bacteria, which are called flora. This makes for incomplete
digestion, also known as putrefaction, rancidity, or rotting of
intestinal contents. Like John Wayne. Autopsy showed 44 pounds of
undigested food in his intestines when he died! Think how heavy that
would feel all those years. Guess nobody ever told The Duke about
probiotics, because he sure didn’t have any.

Direct action

Like I’ve said before, and I’ll say it again, go to the farm and see for yourself what goes on. Become informed about what sustainable agriculture
looks like. Make sure you’re getting pasture-raised meat and ask a lot
of questions. What do the pigs eat? Why do they eat that? What happens
when they eat that? Keep asking why, like a 5-year-old, until you get
answers that make sense to you. Don’t give in to the farmer and don’t
let him dismiss your questions.

It’s up to you and you alone to know what’s in you food. Are you
going to trust some blood-sucking parasite from the state to tell you
what’s good for you? Does he really have your best interest in mind?
Probably not, just collecting a paycheck, working a 9-5er. No one knows
better than you, right? So take ownership of yourself and be free today.
Freedom is powerful and some take it for granted but you don’t have to.
As Spiderman says, “With great power comes great responsibility.” With
that, own yourself and your food and remember to eat free or die.
