[size=15.6]Schemes to deliberately manipulate the Earth’s climate could prove useless, and at worst harmful, claims a new study.[/size]


[size=15.6]The strategies include reflecting sunlight from space, adding lime to the oceans, and irrigating vast expanses of the North African and Australian deserts to grow trees.[/size]


[size=15.6]Known as geoengineering, ideas such as these have gained popularity with some governments attempting to meet their carbon emission targets while still producing cheap energy.[/size]

Future solutions: A number of geoengineering techniques are currently being discussed, including blasting aerosols into the sky to deflect radiation and pumping liquid CO2 into the ground


[size=15.6]Now researchers at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research have used software to test the potential benefits and drawbacks of five different geoengineering technologies.[/size]

[size=15.6]Their study suggests that even when several technologies are combined, geoengineering would be unable to prevent average surface temperatures from rising more than 2°C (3.6°F) above current temperatures by the year 2100.

[size=15.6]‘The long-term consequences and side effects of these methods have not been adequately studied,’ said Dr David Keller from the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research in Kiel, Germany.[/size]

[size=15.6]For example, the fertilisation of the oceans allowed plankton to remove CO2 from the atmosphere, but also changed the size of ocean oxygen minimum zones.[/size]
[size=15.6]'Geoengineering methods that use technology in air capture machines that remove CO2 directly from the atmosphere may prove to be much more viable as a climate engineering component of our response to global warming,' suggests Dr Tim Fox, head of Energy and Environment at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

[size=15.6]'The air capture approach tackles the root problem without ecosystem intervention and involves controlled capturing of CO2 from the atmosphere.

[size=15.6]Once captured the gas can either be buried underground or used as a feedstock for industrial processes that effectively recycle the carbon in a closed loop.[/size]
[size=15.6]The researchers addressed the question of what might happen if climate engineering stopped after a few decades for technical or political reasons.[/size]

[size=15.6]For example, if after 50 years the sun's rays were no longer partially blocked, Earth warmed by several degrees within a few decades.[/size]
[size=15.6]Dr Keller said: ‘This change would be much faster than the current rate of climate change, with potentially even more catastrophic consequences.’[/size]
[size=15.6]Dr Matt Watson, Senior Lecturer in Natural Hazards, University of Bristol, added: 'This paper’s concluding remarks suggest that climate engineering must not be relied upon as a get out jail free card.[/size]
[size=15.6]'It reinforces the conventional wisdom that there is no easy solution and that no one methodology or technology will provide us with a silver bullet.'
