Helpline launched for cervical cancer sufferers
A woman from Ayrshire who battled cervical cancer is urging other sufferers to take advantage of a new national helpline.
The charity Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust has launched the service
following a survey which showed 90% of women thought they would benefit
from calling a helpline.
Suzanne Fernando, from Beith, was 34 weeks pregnant when she was diagnosed with the disease.
She said: "I had chemotherapy, radiotherapy, internal radiation and many operations. It completely devastated our whole family."
Every year in Scotland about 300 new cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed and 100 women die from the disease.
The Jo's Trust helpline is being staffed by volunteer who have
all had experience of cervical abnormalities or cervical cancer, either
personally or as health professionals.
Robert Music, Director of Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust, said:
“This is the first helpline of its kind solely dedicated to anyone in
the UK affected by cervical abnormalities or cervical cancer: the women
themselves or anyone concerned for them."
Having fought cervical cancer, Ms Fernando now works with
charities to raise awareness. She said: "I would urge anyone with any
concerns to please get in touch, potentially it could save your life."
