Downing Street tonight condemned ‘trial by Twitter’ after David Cameron was sensationally handed a list of alleged Tory paedophiles on live television. This Morning presenter Phillip Schofield said he had compiled the list of names after a three-minute ‘cursory glance’ at the internet, and gave it to the Prime Minister live on ITV1.
But the presenter later admitted a ‘misjudged camera angle’ meant some of the names could have been seen by the programme’s millions of viewers, as a Tory MP wrote to Ofcom claiming ITV may have broken broadcasting rules.

Appearing on the daytime sofa, Mr Cameron said he had ‘heard all sorts of names being bandied around’ but quickly condemned the stunt. The PM warned: ‘There is a danger if we are not careful, that this can turn into a sort of witch-hunt, particularly against people who are gay.’

Later Downing Street stepped up its criticism of the programme for trying to embarrass the Prime Minister instead of handing credible evidence to the police. The Prime Minister’s official spokesman told a media briefing: ‘We shouldn’t have people just throwing names and allegations around and trial by Twitter. The right way to deal with these matters is to go to the police.’
Mr Schofield sensationally apologised for flashing the card in front of the cameras: ‘If any viewer was able to identify anyone listed, I would like to apologise and stress that was never my intention.’
