Tensions Increase as China Scrambles Warplanes Chris Carrington
Activist Post Chinese state media has reported that warplanes have been scrambled and sent to the newly created air defense zone in the East China Sea. There has been no comment on which country violated the new regulations.
So far, the US, South Korea and Japan have all flown military aircraft through the zone, and all have refused to comply with China’s new rules.
South Korea’s Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se said on Wednesday that it had made “already tricky regional situations even more difficult to deal with.”
Japan’s top government spokesman said:
- Quote :
- Even since China has created this airspace defence zone, we have continued our surveillance activities as before in the East China Sea, including in the zone. We are not going to change this [activity] out of consideration to China.” (source)
The United States has condemned the move saying that the setting up of the zone is ”a destabilizing attempt to alter the status quo in the region.”
