The risk of being thrown in a cage for possessing a relatively benign plant forces responsible pot smokers to rely on shady drug dealers to get weed. Not anymore.
With two states, Colorado and Washington, legalizing cannabis for recreational use, more civilized ways to get weed are finally emerging. However, for those who don't live within "legalized" borders, buying weed online is the next safest route.
With the recent closure of Atlantis and FBI seizure of Silk Road, many may think virtual black markets have gone away, but it turns out that they're just getting started.
In fact, black market experts conclude that after two years and millions of dollars spent by authorities to take down Silk Road, the US government only awakened a decentralized monster of online drug store competition with better security than before. It's much like how the Feds patted themselves on the back for shutting down Napster, and we all know what happened after that.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation pointed out that the anonymous technology is not to blame for Silk Road's demise, rather it was human errors made by its operator.
Silk Road 2.0 is said to be in the works with even more decentralized encryption. In the meantime, many of its vendors have opened shop with competitors like Sheep or Black Market Reloaded which both operate similarly to Silk Road.
Black Market Reloaded has been around longer and both use an escrow checkout feature "finalize" which is essential to weeding out government-run "honey pot" vendors. Sheep seems very user friendly but has less US vendors.
Here are the 3 simple steps you need to complete an order:
1. Tor Browser: First, you need to get Tor which is a free open-source browser with encryption and anonymity built into it. Unlike Internet Explorer, Chrome, or Firefox, Tor automatically hides your IP (Internet Protocol) address with layered routing through virtual tunnels and doesn't record any of your activity. Installing the Tor bundle takes 30 seconds and is well worth having for other privacy reasons. Download Tor here.
2. Bitcoin: Next, you'll need to get some Bitcoin, the decentralized anonymous digital currency described in the video below:
To get bitcoins, you'll first need to get a Bitcoin wallet. You can either get a personal wallet client for your computer or mobile device, a cloud wallet, or a paper wallet. Paper wallets are the most anonymous way to hold and use bitcoins.
Next you need to buy some bitcoins. The easiest and fastest way to get bitcoin is through Coinbase.
3. Open your Tor browser and visit either of these sites that function much like Silk Road did:
Registering an account requires two passwords like at Silk Road: a passphrase and a PIN. Keep them in a safe place. You'll need both of them to make a purchase.
Before you can buy anything you must fund your account with Bitcoin. Click on "account" and they will issue a Bitcoin address for deposits. Once your account is funded, buying a product is fairly straightforward.
Use caution. Proceed at your own risk.
UPDATE: Sheep Marketplace was recently hacked and ransacked.
