California's water supply headed for collapse in just one year; state has "no contingency plan" - NASA scientist

(NaturalNews) Add California's water supply to your list of "things headed for imminent collapse." The state has only one year of reserves remaining, warns Jay Famiglietti, the senior water scientist at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory at Caltech.

In a widely-cited LA Times opinion piece, Famiglietti writes that "...the state has only about one year of water supply left in its reservoirs, and our strategic backup supply, groundwater, is rapidly disappearing. California has no contingency plan for a persistent drought..."

But don't worry: California has no plan for balancing its budget, either. Nor does it have a plan for how to pay for all the social entitlements it has promised its population of dependents. And finally, California has no real plan to fund its pension promises, either, which means that California state retirees not only face a future without water; they also face a future without a pension check.

Like nearly all Americans, Californians are slow to accept the reality of the future they face
"[groundwater] pumping rates are excessive and unsustainable," says Famiglietti. "Wells are running dry. In some areas of the Central Valley, the land is sinking by one foot or more per year."

California, it turns out, is sinking at every level: it's a horrendously expensive business environment, a rapidly expanding police state that tramples on constitutional freedoms, a high income tax state, a high crime rate state and a high rent state. California is running out of easy jobs, easy money and cheap water. No wonder the Northern half of the state wants to break away from the Southern half and declare itself a sovereign state.

So what happens to all the Californians in the Southern half of the state? What happens to Los Angeles, let's say, when the water gets rationed two just two days a week like we're already witnessing in Sao Paulo, Brazil?

It's abundantly obvious that almost no one actually living in California has yet come to their senses about the reality of this situation, because if they did, there would be a glut of homes for sale as everyone tried to get out ahead of the water collapse. "The last people to understand the collapse of an empire are those who live within it." writes Jeff Thomas of InternationalMan.com. He's speaking about the U.S. empire, but the lesson simultaneously applies to California, Sao Paulo, or all the cities and towns served by water from Lake Mead (which is also rapidly running out of water).

By and large, people are unwilling to accept the reality of where things are headed because doing so would require them to take action. And action is difficult. It required courage, effort and even inconvenience. Besides, the population of California has been discouraged from thinking ahead about anything, thanks to the nanny state politicians running the show there -- people who get elected by disingenuously promising the voters that government will take care of them.

But it turns out that even Nancy Pelosi cannot materialize water out of thin air, although she might be happy to suggest we should all blindly enact a new water law so we can find out what's in it. Governments can lie about the debt, lie about unemployment and fudge economic statistics until they're blue in the face; but they cannot trick people into thinking there's water fallout out of the sky when it isn't. Yes, the average brainwashed California voter is brutally propagandized to such an extreme that they really do believe unvaccinated children are a far greater threat to society than undocumented gang bangers, but even these people know the difference between RAIN and NO RAIN.

My guess is that the next move of the California government will be to declare "drought" to be an "anti-science conspiracy theory" and start publicly berating anyone who dares speak the word. "There's water everywhere!" we'll all be told, as orchards shrivel into dust and California's agricultural sector implodes. "People who believe in droughts also think the Earth is flat!"

I can't wait for California's Governor to go on television and declare, "I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Mrs. Drought."

Who knows, maybe California will even start adding electrolytes to their irrigation water and calling it BRAWNDO, the Thirst Quencher!

Where will all the Californians go?
On a more serious note, what we're really looking at here is America's coming wave of ecological refugees looking for a new place to live that actually has water.

As the water runs out across many areas of California, residents there will attempt to sell their homes and flee. Property prices will, of course, plummet rapidly, causing a real estate market crash in California which in turn will set off a collapse in California's property tax revenues, further worsening the state's acceleration toward a debt collapse.

As people do finally pack up and leave, some will head North, into Northern California, Oregon and Washington, where water is far more abundant and affordable. Others will head East, toward Arizona which is facing its own looming water crisis. Or perhaps they'll end up in Las Vegas, where a near-total water collapse is also imminent due to Lake Mead's plummeting water reserves.

Those who stay behind in California face a life of extreme water use regulation (it might be illegal to take a shower longer than 3 minutes), extremely high water prices (imagine $1000 a month in water bills for a household of four) and water rationing that turns off water to homes and businesses on certain days of the week.

Think it could never happen? It's happening right now in Sao Paulo, a city of 20 million people suffering under the same sort of delusional socialist government that runs California. While Northern California is potentially a viable region with a bright future -- if it can break free from the debt burdens of the rest of the state -- Southern California looks headed for collapse at multiple levels: economic, ecological and even cultural. The most likely future of the large cities in Southern California will involve the surrender of large areas to violent gangs who will run the black market economies of not just drugs and weapons smuggling, but even water transportation and delivery.

Wherever governments fail to provide basic necessities, an underground market will quickly rise up and take its place. If California's delusional, elite plutocrats cannot make more water fall out of the sky for free, gang-bangers from MS-13 will be happy to deliver it for cash.

Who knows... if water scarcity gets bad enough, the smuggling and transportation of water might someday be just as lucrative as smuggling weed, a market plunging in value due to the legalization trend sweeping America today. It's not to imagine a future in California where WEED possession is legal, but WATER possession is criminalized.
