UK to launch biggest ever probe onto police misconduct

A police watchdog will investigate alleged murder in connection to the Hillsborough deaths in 1989.

The
independent police watchdog is to launch the biggest probe into alleged
misconduct caused by various police departments in the UK, arising from
the Hillsborough disaster.


The watchdog’s wide-ranging investigation into suspected
manslaughter will search for possible hidden truths inside the South
Yorkshire police, West- Midlands police and others.


Kier Starmer, the director of public prosecutions (DPP), said that
he will review all the evidence immediately in the 395-page report to
decide if new charges of murder can be brought forward.


"I have now concluded that the Crown Prosecution Service should
consider all the material now available in relation to the tragic events
of 15 April 1989, including material made available by the independent
panel. The purpose of this investigation is to identify what the focus
of any further criminal investigation should be in order for the CPS to
determine whether this is now sufficient evidence to charge any
individual or corporate body with any criminal offence," Starmer said.


The investigation, the biggest ever independent review of the
British police, will focus on allegations of police statements being
changed and false information passed on to the media and the UK
parliament.


This comes years after the disaster, which occurred on 15 April
1989, when a total of 96 football fans were crushed to death at
Sheffield football stadium during the semi-final UK football club match
between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.
